Chapter 21:
Overwhelm Your Other Senses
âIf you overthink things, practice turning it offâand watch the magic happen.â
âSunil Saxena, M.D.
Often when youâre trying to take Massive Action, your fear and other emotions will hold you back. Interestingly, dogs and babies donât have emotions that get in the wayâthey just react spontaneously. In most situations, they simply do what they want to do. Thatâs why they always âsteal the show.â While this may not always be the right behavior for an adult, thinking a little less and doing a little more can be much-needed medicine for adults in many situations. Most of us overthink things.
A benefit of taking Massive Action is that you actually overcome your senses. Itâs an interesting phenomenon and one that you can use to your advantage.
Think of the last time you really enjoyed yourself in a social situation. Likely you were in a comfortable environment with great friends, or maybe you were just in a great mood. You were calm and free and having a fun time. Not a lot of thinking, just living in the moment.
You may not have realized it, but you were not allowing your senses to block you in that situation. You werenât thinking about what people might be thinking of you; you were not wondering if they liked you. You werenât thinking about why you were there, you didnât want to go home, you werenât worried about what to say next, and you werenât concerned whether it was the ârightâ thing to say. You were just being you. Your authenticity came out, and thatâs what makes you so attractive to othersâand increases your self-confidence.
The same thing happens when youâre taking Massive Action. Focusing all your efforts on achieving your goals brings out the real you and increases your confidence; your other senses, the ones that make you hesitate and overthink a situation, donât get in the way. Taking Massive Action allows you to put the overly analytical part of your brain aside and just keep going. More importantly, it doesnât stop your momentum!
One of the most interesting things about working in the emergency room is the swift pace. Iâve heard someone say that the average ER doctor makes over 2,000 decisions in a 10-hour shift. Sometimes it felt like even more! I remember times when I had to go to the bathroom so bad I felt like I couldnât hold it anymoreâbut six hours later, I realized I still hadnât gone.
In certain high-pressure situations, when it feels like so much is being thrown at you so quickly, many of your senses simply turn off so you can focus and get things done. Sometimes the pressure is so intense that it actually turns off the physical trigger in your brain that tells you itâs time to urinate. It also relaxes your bladder so it can accommodate more volume and reduces the urge to pee.
On a larger scale, this is the same phenomenon that often accompanies taking Massive Action.
